ST. VALENTINE'S DAY SPECIAL!

rs:a

141. Fear not the autumn’s chill while lindens bloom
or coddle acorns grown far reaching oaks.
Lean into the wind, lie upon the mud
dance round the flame and bathe whilst rain drops soak.

I give my present, a heart unencumbered
by past and future gibbering ado
each beat intent upon itself, unnumbered
and unconcerned with anything but you.

For what we were fades immutably stone
and what we will be, will be dealt with soon.
Our guilt, regret and fears cannot atone.
They merely cloud our day with darkling moon.

Thus I present my present here and now
(assuming I can figure out how).

67. Wilted petals nod atop brittle stems
as foil flesh and cardboard bones lie picked clean
among once red hearts of yesterdays whim:
crumpled reminders of Valentines fleeting.

Mercantile interests hold these votifs high
as proof of everlasting devotion.
For impermenant goods consumers buy
ensure continual exploitation.

But what of the faith Psyche and Cupid
or St. Valentine with his life did show,
that love never fades or becomes jaded
and will overcome all physical woes.

I hope these lines, threfore, a better prize
than any bauble that withers and dies.
